Internet connections are not always as fast as you need them to be. Learn a few things you can do to browse the Internet or send email fast, even when your connection is slow.

  1. Send Multiple Files Faster by Compressing Them – if you’re sending multiple files you can reduce their combined size by using a compression utility.  Compressing files can drastically reduce the time you need to send the files online, and they will not take up as much room in your recipient’s inbox. A simple Google search should be able to give you step by step instructions on doing this with your operating system.
  2. Increase Browsing Speed by Turning off Graphics in Windows Internet Explorer – graphics are important to web pages, but the time to download can make your computer run slower.  You can turn them off to speed up your Internet browsing by looking up the instructions specific to your operating system online.
  3. Send Email Using Contact Groups – sending an email to multiple people can make your system run slower if you enter addresses in individually. Creating a contact group can save you time and Internet speed. All email providers have a way of doing this, and the same contact can be added to multiple groups if necessary. It may take a while to set up each group, but the time you save in the future will be worth it.
  4. Reduce Email Size with Simple Email Signatures – email signatures are your professional stamp at the end of a message, but complicated signatures with multiple images can make sending an email take longer than is necessary. You can make your signature smaller while keeping it professional looking by combining the use of fonts, type sizes, and colors to make your signature stand out and keep your Internet speed efficient.
  5. Work Offline Using Cached Exchange Mode in Outlook – cached Exchange mode keeps a copy of your mailbox stored on your computer, so even if you lose your network connection you will still be able to work with files and emails that were backed up the last time you were successfully online. This only works if you use a Microsoft Exchange Server for email.
  6. Browse Offline by Saving Web Pages on Your Computer – frequently used web pages can be saved locally on your computer in order to maintain access to the information when your Internet connection is moving at a snail’s pace or not at all.
  7. Open Webpages Faster by Increasing Your Cache – increasing the size of your Internet cache gives your browser permission to store information so that your computer will not have to work as hard downloading information when you revisit website pages.  Images and other content that increase the time it takes for a page to upload will already be waiting for you, decreasing the time it takes the page to open.

Even if only a few of these tips apply to you, implementing any one of them will improve your Internet browsing experience when using a slow connection.
